Final Spring Training Post

Pettitte's back issue is not Joba's ticket to the rotation - he's not ready, that's why he's in the pen, and why he'll be staying there. It may provide an opportunity for a guy like Steven White, or dare I say it, Kei Igawa.
---
AL Playoff Teams: Seattle, Cleveland, NY, and Toronto. I'm not sold on the Tigers from a professionalism standpoint. Seattle got a huge upgrade with Bedard (I think this guy is one of the best pitchers in the league). Sox will be injury plagued, and I think Toronto with the best outfield in the game, Roy and the big closer is ready to make the push.
---
NL Playoff Teams: Arizona, Milwaukee, Phillies, and LA. Arizona has the most consistent pitching and will show us it was not a fluke. The Brewers have a real superstar in JJ Hardy and the Cubs are over rated. The 2008 version of the NL East (I'm serious not just saying this as a jab to 57) might be the weakest division in the history of MLB. Santana's tired arm and Maine won't be enough to lift the Mets or save Willie's job. If the Mets don't sign Reed Johnson than Omar needs to go as well. Smoltz, whom as time goes on I just respect more and more, will will his team to the playoffs once again.
---
Biggest Disappointment: It breaks my heart, but it is the performance of Jeff Karstens. The door was open and he blew it.
---
Predicitons: Abreu and Jeter both have career years. Giambi surprises on the upside. Hughes and Kennedy combine for 34 wins, Wang gets 20 but not enough for the Cy Young (Eric Bedard). Jeter, A-Rod and Abreu split the East Coast vote opening the door for an unbranded Alex Rios for AL MVP, JJ Hardy will get it for the NL.
---
What? In another sign that Old Prof is losing his mind in questioning when I had Igawa as a "Lock" to make the roster - check the post from Monday, March 10th. Oh. And your apology is accepted.

OK..i am signed up for fantasy baseball. My number 1 ranked player is Jose Reyes... if I don't get him, then I am out of the league.
Joooose... jose..jose jose...

Of all the Brewers to pick you say JJ Hardy is NL MVP??? If you had said Fielder or Braun or even Hart you would have been ok, but Hardy??? Good player, not even close to the class of the 3 I mention above.

I hat to do it but I agrewe with your AL picks.
NY, Seattle, Cleveland, and Toronto

NL is Arizona, Chicago , NY, and Atlanta.

Milwaukee doesn't have the starting rotation and has to rely on Gagne to close games. I know there is an anti-Mets bias, but pitching wins, and the Mets have the best rotation in the NL. Better than the Diamondbacks and better than the Padres. Much like last year the NL West will come down to the final week. Arizona, Colorado, San Diego and LA will all be close, but it's the pitching of AZ that gets it done.

Seattle and NY in the ALCS
Arizona and NY in the NLCS

NY/NY Subway Series.
Yankees over the Mets in 5 for #27.

Mid said...

the best rotation in the NL? Are you crazy. Santana and Maine and three other guys named Mo does not equal the best rotation

Crash said...

You need to take off the anti-Met blinders. Santana is hands down the best pitcher in the league. Pedro looks healthy this spring and has been very good. If this holds he is the best #2 in the league by far. Maine and Perez are great at the 3 and 4 spots. 3 of the 4 starters will be over 185 strikeouts. Pedro will approach 150. You can get the batboy to pitch in the #5 spot and they would still be the best in the NL.

The D-backs and Padres are the only teams that come close to this rotation in the NL. But they both have question marks. Arizona has a great 1-2 with Webb and Haren. But after that you have to rely on Old Man Randy Johnson (maybe an injury risk?) and Doug Davis who is an innings eater but nothing more than a .500 pitcher. Owings looks good and should be decent if he improves.

The Padres may actually have better pitching than the D-backs with Peavy, Young, and Maddux at the top of the rotation. But Maddux is old, Peavy has had some health problems and Chirs Young missed time last year as well. In fact Chris Young hasn't had more than 180 innings yet. He needs to show durability and the ability to pitch 200+ innings this year. If they stay healthy and Prior can comeback and be productive in the second half they could surprise some teams. Their #4 and 5 guys (Germano and Wolf are serviceable).

Is there another team that has better pitching in the NL? Let me hear it. Please Mid (or anyone else) I'm begging you, make a reasonable argument for another NL team's rotation. I hate giving the Mets any credit at all.

Mid said...

Braves: Smoltz, Hudson, Glavine, Jurrjens, Hampton
Brewers: Sheets, Suppan, Capuano
Dodgers: Penny Lowe, Billinglsey
Cubs: Zambrano, Lilly, Marquis
Phillies: Hammels, Myers, Moyer

Depth.

Mid said...

Chris Britton and Scott Strickland sent down to minors.

Crash said...

Braves 2 of the 4 are over 40, both HOF but obviously their best days are behind them. Glavine will be lucky to win 10 games this year. Hudson hasn't lived up to the hype since coming over to Atlanta, Jurrjens looks promising but has only 30 innings in the majors. He wasn't even a lock for the rotation until Hampton spiked himself in warm ups.

Brewers: Sheets hasn't pitched a full season in 3 years, Capuano is having TJ surgery, his 2nd in 5 years, and Suppan led the team last year with a 4.62 ERA (that was in the weak NL Central). You left off their best pitcher Gallardo who is starting the season on the DL because of knee surgery.

Penny is only a first half pitcher. If Schmidt comes back healthy and Penny can pitch a solid full year this rotation may be decent.

The Phills look good, Hammels is awesome. Myers is a strike out machine. Kendirck did well in his rookie season he needs to improve on that. Moyer will be lucky to win 10.

Out of this group I would say the Phills probably come the closest to the Mets but it still isn't that close. You would take Santana over Hammels, maybe Myers over Pedro, but it's definitely Maine and Perez over Kendrick and Moyer.

old professor said...

Mid, while you know I have no use for the other team located in NYC, if you want to count Queens as part of the city, the Mets rotation if it stays healthy will make them a prohibitive favorite to win the east. Arizona's rotation is solid as long as everyone stays healthy.

Having said that, the Mets are already having health issues with their position players, which if any are prolonged, could be a big problem.

Not surprised with Strickland being sent down, look for him to be released. Britton has pitched well and it is unfortunate there isn't space for him. Still would not be surprised to see Igwa and Traber stay with the team.

The Scooter said...

OK, I think I'm signed up for the fantasy league thing.

Why are we spending so much time on the National League? I mean, does it really matter what triple A team will represent those guys in the World Series? All it really is, is who gets the chance to be totally humiliated by the Yankees, Tigers or Red Sox come late October.

But if we must.....Mets' pitching staff can go either way. Santana is obviously one of the top 3 starters in baseball, but after that, you really don't know what you are going to get:

Pedro can win 20 games or 2 games all year...who knows if he will hold up?

Maine is a solid number three, but you have to wonder if the league will catch up to him this year, and if they do will he be able to make the necessary adjustments to continue to be successful. A 50/50 proposition, at best.

Oliver Perez is another gamble...sometimes he looks like a stud...sometimes he looks like a dud.

And their 5th starter is anybody's guess...Vargas?

Bullpen is solid but not spectacular. I especially don't like Wagner in a big spot.

Their everyday lineup will not exactly scare anybody.

Weak offensively at both corner outfield spots, catcher and first base (put a fork in Delgado...he's done).

Their shortstop is becoming known as a classic underachiever; their center fielder is overrated; and their second baseman is pedestrian.

Other than David Right and Santana, I wouldn't take any of these guys on my team.

I think they are in for a long year, finishing behind the Braves and Phillies in the NL Least.

Mid said...

Game 1 Batting Order:

Damon (LF)
Jeter
Abreu
ARod
Cano
Posada
Matsui
Giambi
Cabrera

Crash said...

I was sorry to hear that Bob Sheppard will not be at the opener on Monday. He's going to miss the last home opener in the Stadium due to health issues. He says he'll be back sometime in the summer. He's only been there for 57 years!!!

I hope he can comeback and be there for next years home opener. It would be only proper for him to call the line ups for the new stadium.

Crash said...

Mid nice line-up. I think Giambi and Cano will be switched though. Giambi, Matsui, and Posada are pretty much interchangeable in the lineup. I'm not sure it matters that much. I would imagine against lefties, you have Posada bat between Giambi and Matsui to break up the left side bats. That's given that Giambi is in there. You would probably see Duncan in the 7 or 8 spot against a lefty.

Mid said...

Yeah, I initially had Giambi ahead of Cano. Then I looked at what Cano has done in the Spring thus far and was thinking that Girardi would want to reward him with a higher place in the order.

57 said...

Scooter, you're nuts. Delgado will break out this year, and I can guarantee the Mets will have the fewest errors in the NL come the All-Star break. Mark it down... bank it.. whatever.

I have stated this before on the record. Offense will not win it for the Mets this year; their pitching will allow them to play in October.

Crash said...

57 your dreaming if you think Delgado will breakout this year. Breakouts happen for players who are 25, 26, 27...not 36!

I think Scooter was the one who brought up how bad the NL will be this year compared to the AL. I'm sure someone must of heard this little highlight this morning: The Giants actually lost an exhibition game to their AAA team. Not only did they lose the game but they had their #1 pitcher Barry Zito on the mound(both Yankees and Mets fans should be happy he didn't sign with a NY team), and their starters all got at least 3ABs. Kind of like that last tune up before the season starts...they lost 4-3. It's going to be a long, long year in SF. Could be the worst team in all of MLB.

Crash said...

As an fyi from today's game, Igawa got lit up, allowing 4 runs in 3 innings. Then Jeff Karstens leaves after a couple of batters with a "leg injury". I'm guessing he was just ticked off about getting reassigned to the minors. With that performance Igawa may have played himself out of the bullpen and down to AAA.

Mid said...

With Karstens and Igawa not getting it done - what about Ross Ohlendorf?

old professor said...

Karstens is probably headed to the DL. Yesterday was the last chance he had to impress. Igwa looked terrible. The roster is now down to 30. Five more have to go. The problem will be what pitchers go down because many of them have been impressive: Bruney, Patterson (how do you send someone down who has allowed only one hit and no runs this Spring?), Olendorf has also looked sharp. Traber should be the left-hander out of the pen.

Too bad Woodward was released. Nice move by Nick Green - he refused to allow his opt-out clause to be activated, the result being he is still with the team.

It also looks as if Pettitte will start the season on the DL and be ready for around April 3 or 5.

old professor said...

For those of you who felt that Saltalmacchia was the next coming of Johnny Bench, the news from Texas must be disappointing. He could not make it as the Rangers backup and has been sent down to Triple A. Couldn't make it with the Braves and now he can't make it with the Rangers. Hey the Marlins could be his next stop.

The Scooter said...

Perfect time to jump in and get Salty at a discount, Prof.

This is the best news I have heard all week.

Crash said...

I was waiting for Old Prof to jump on that one.

The roster is taking shape. Jason Lane, Cody Ransom, and Gardner were all reassigned to minors along with Strickland.

Patterson, Traber, Olhendorf, and Bruney are locks for the pen. Each have had a lot of work this spring, they all have ERAs 2.00 or better, and they have great K/BB ratios. Add Mo, Joba, and Hawkins and the bullpen shapes up pretty well.

I would think that they would carry Rasner as the long man, does that mean the Yankees go with 13 pitchers to start the season?

I don't understand cutting Woodward. You have a back-up utility position available and it looks like it's coming down to Betemit (batting .157) or Green (.185). But they reassign Ransom (.289) and release Woodward who was hitting over .390???

The Scooter said...

Time For Predictions:

American League:

AL East Champ: NY YANKEES 94 wins
AL Central Champ: TIGERS 98 wins
AL West CHAMP: Mariners 90 wins
AL Wild Card: Red Sox 92 Wins

notes: I'm not buying all this about the Blue Jays ready to compete with the big boys. Injuries haunt them all year (again) and they finish a distant 3rd in the division.

Devil Rays are not yet ready to get to .500. Kazmir injured on and off all year.

Orioles will slug it out with the SF Giants and the Pirates to see who is the worst team in baseball.

White Sox are out of it by the All Star Break...Ozzie Guillen's head explodes.

Cleveland is in it until the end, fighting for the AL Wild Card, but Carmona goes down with a bad elbow in September and you can say goodbye to them.

National League:

NL East Champs: Braves 91 wins
NL Central Champs: Cubs 91 wins
NL West Champs:Diamondbacks 93 wins
NL Wild Card: Dodgers 88 wins

Mets get 20 from Santana but Pedro retires mid year when he blows out an elbow, Maine has a mediocre year, Pelfy LOSES 18 games. They score on average 2.5 runs per game, EVERY ONE of them driven in by David Wright.

The Wilpon's fire Omar and Willie at years end and after flirting with Brian Cashman, they hire Grady Little as GM and Manager for '09.

Yankees vs. Diamondbacks in the WS and we finally get our revenge as Phil Hughes out-pitches Randy Johnson in Game 7.

Mid said...

I'm disappointed they sent Gardner down I thought he did enough to stay.

57 said...

Scooter, what is fantasy land like? Can you let me know when you get back?

Well, good luck to the Yankees and Mets tomorrow. A setimental day in 'da Bronx. In 1923, Babe hit a 3 run knock on the first opening day at The Stadium. Who will be this year's hero.. or goat?

You don't have to be a fan of the Yankees to marvel at the heroes that graced that stadium. Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle, Maris, Scooter (the 'real' one), Jackson (even though he is a prick), and the list goes on... it is pretty amazing that a cathedral that stood for 85 years stood for more than just baseball. Through the Depression, World War II and 9/11..it was a place to go to heal and get away from life's issues and enjoy life for a few hours; an escape. An applause to Yankee stadium and a farewell. As Seinfeld said, we root for the laundry. But we also root for the cement foundation.

My Shea Stadium farewell will begin on their opening day after they sweep Florida and Atlanta on the road. I can't WAIT until they face Glavine this week! A little payback for his cavalier attitude while with the Mets.

Go Reyes! He'll hit a triple and home-run tomorrow. Delgado has three RBIs and Johann goes 7. Mets' win 5-3

Mid said...

wow - I cannot believe that Scott Patterson was sent down.

It always bothers me when performance isn't enough to earn a spot at the table.

one hit, no earned the entire Spring.

Bad judgment by Yankee mgmt on this one.

old professor said...

I was suprised to see Patterson go down as well. Yankees also sent down Rasner, Igwa, and Green. No long guy in the pen as they decide to keep the pitcher they picked up from the Nationals for Clippard (not even going to try and spell his name or pronounce it). I was also surprised to see they kept Bettemit, who finished the Spring with a .167 average- now there is power off the bench.

Crash said...

Mid I agree, Patterson should have made the team. Bruney, Ohlendorf, and Traber all make it. I think they have Albaladejo on the roster because of Pettitte starting on the DL. Traber is the only left-hander in the pen right now.

Can't wait for the season to start. Hope they can get the game in today. I have no idea why MLB schedules a season opener, in MARCH, in NY. Makes no sense.

Mid said...

I agree - we talked about his a lot last year - perhaps openeing week should be held for dome teams and south west first - east and central later in the month.

The Scooter said...

Yep, Albaladejo is only up until Andy comes of the DL.

Bruney pitched really well all spring too. He's slimmed down, throwing hard and hitting his spots.

I think they want to groom Ohlendorf for the 8th inning once Joba hits the rotation in the second part of the year. And lets face it, it's nice having a competent lefty in the pen and Traber might be the guy.

Patterson will get his shot, I'm sure. Briton will also be in the mix before the year is out.

Bettemit was never in any jeopardy of not making the team. He is the first bat off the bench (when Duncan's in the game) and he will hit when the games start to count.

Pumped up Baby...Hope they get the game in.

I actually watched the Braves/Nationals last night. Pretty exciting finish.

57 said...

Why can't the Mets come clean as to what REALLY happened in Florida to Duaner Sanchez two years back. He has not been the same since the 'accident'. What a waste of promising talent if he remains on the DL for a while... My stomach gets tight when I think of Pelfry's 8.15 spring ERA and his #5 slot.

old professor said...

The schedule makers should be taken out and shot. It makes no sense to start the season on March 31st in NYC. There are enough domed stadiums and warm weather areas for the northern teams to not risk snow and cold. In addition, the Red Sox start the season with 22 of their first 25 against teams that finished above 500 last year. The Yankees have a stretch of 18 of 20 games on the road. Schedules like this are the only way to keep the Marlins, Pirates, Rays, and Brewers competitive through the all-star break.

57 said...

Prof.. the Marlins start in a hole today facing Johann... the next coming.

Marlins may start in a hole against Santana, however, after that they get to face the rest of the Mets rotation which is ordinary at best.
