Hote Stove Update

Theo Epstein is over spending as he recognizes his club is in serious danger of finishing 3rd in the AL East for consecutive years. - Signing JD Drew to a $70 million / 5-year deal and Julio Lugo to a $36 million / 4-year deal.

Rumors of Richie Sexson heading to the Bronx can't be confirmed, OR denied.

If we can sign a lefty - then its game, set, match regardless of how more the Bo Sox spend and/or what they get in return for the trade of Mann Ram.

I don't care what they get back for him, if the Sox trade Manny Yankee fans will be dancing in the streets.

I can't wait to see Drew trying to protect Ortiz in that lineup.

Lugo, while an upgrade over what they had last year, he's not Tejada...so that's a good thing.

Big Sexy at first base for the bombers, huh? Interesting....though I'd rather have Teixeira. He's younger and doesn't strike out as much. I just hope Cashman doesn't think a Craig Wilson/Todd Walker platoon is the answer.

How about signing Gagne to set up for Rivera?

I don't trust pitchers off of injury or from the west coast - be that as it may, having gagne as a set up would be a fairly intimidating situation for opposing teams.

While Yankee fans may be dancing in the street if Manny goes to the National League, the Sox improve by subtraction. Manny has been a distraction in the club house. Curt Shilling put it best "it might be in the best interest of all if Manny was traded".

As for Richie Sexton at first base, too many strikeouts. Add his strikeouts to A-Rod's and you have the chance at some real significant rally killing going on.

Gagne would be interesting, however, he has made it clear he wants to stay on the West Coast.

The rumors surrounding Andy Pettitte and the possiblility that he is contemplating an offer for only one year is interesting. If he is mentally ready to return to the game he would be a good fit in the rotation.

WOW...The Dodgers just gave Schmidt $47 million for three years....that's a lot a cake for this guy.

Lilly; four years, forty million to the Cubs.

Prof, looks like Andy Pettitte has told his agent he wants to pitch...He will be back in Pinstripes by the end of the weekend...and Clemens will be in Pinstripes by the end of the summer.

I would just like to point out that AP heading back to the his rightful home was reported several weeks ago by your truly.

This is where you go to get the dish from the Hot Stove!

Anon...you really went out on a limb with that one.

Considering I posted it back on 11/7 with several pitchers still very much on the table, I would say it was quite the limb and the limb is now turning out to be the reality as Mr. Cash just today offered him a 1 yr $15mm deal.

What's up -

Well Mid, don't break your arm patting yourself on the back. Mike Francessa was speculating on Andy's return for the '07 season back in August.

Pettitte 1 year at $16 million, with a player option for 2008 for another $16 million.

I like Sexson in the Yanks line-up you can bat him in the 6 hole and have 3 guys who will hit over 40 HRs and drive in 100+ runs (A-Rod, Giambi, and Sexson). Oh yeah then you follow up with Matsui, Posada, and Cano. With that line up you could see 6 of 9 guys bat over .300, with every guy 1 through 9 over 20 HRs and 90 RBI.

What Yankee fans should worry about is the potential of Gagne going to the Red Sox. Gagne will not sign to set-up.

What I don't understand is why a guy like Dotel would rather close for the Royals than remain with a winner. I don't believe the Yanks offered him a contract, but I'm sure if he said he would come back to set up they would have made an offer.

Looks like the Yanks are looking at Dustin Hermanson to set up. He was a stud in Chitown before his back went. Not a bad gamble if it doesn't cost too much.

I just heard that they might sign Doug Mientkiewicz to play first base. He's not exactly Sexton or Texiera.....But he does bring the leather, and with all the ground ball pitchers they have in the rotation, it might be prudent to go defense first at that position.

If they go that way, they better get monster power numbers out of A-Rod and Giambi.

Mientkiewicz would be interesting. He's about a .270 hitter who won't strike out a ton (litterly 1/2 of what sexson has done). It would also be a better move financially (probabyly get him for $1.5-2 million rather than the $14M owed to Sexson). Plus you don't have to give up anything.

If Hermanson's back is healthy he is a great add to the 'pen. You have to figure with all the starters already for the rotation, Proctor is likely the 8th-inning guy. They may need a lefty in the pen if Villone leaves (looking that he will).

If the yankees sign Hermanson that would give them one right handed pitcher with a bad back and one lefty with a bad back. Let's not forget that the Yankees already have one right handed reliever in the pen who needs everyother day off because of a bad back. Sounds like the training room will have to buy a lot of Ben Gay.

Do you actually thing that Meintkiewicz is an upgrade over Phillips? He didn/t cut it with Minnesota, was let go by Boston and played last year with I believe KC and didn't catch on long-term their either - Shouldn't that send up some warning flags about this particular player?

Old Prof,as long as they stagger Farnsworth and Hermanson then they could make it work. Farnsworth rests his back on Monday...Hermanson on Tuesday and so on..ha ha ha ha.

Point well taken on Meintkiewicz. While he would be a major upgrade defensively (although Phillips is adequate), I really don't think you would get much more from him with the bat.
