All Is Not Quiet On The Western Front

Bobby Murcer returns to the booth - good to hear his voice again on YES

Yanks return to winning to ways - offense returns, defense was more the solid

Starting to see why Philly was willing to let Abreu go

Phil Hughes was strong and getting stronger at the time of his injury. Some say the next Rocket. When was the last time you saw Clemens throw a 12 to 6 curve, followed by a 67 mph change? Hughes is more than power - he can pitch. Yanks were playing with fire bringing him up - can only hope the injury will heal and not re-occur.

The biggest story never told continues with yet another Yankee going down with a hamstring. What the hell is going on in the strength and conditioning dept.?????

I'm sick to my stomach over the Hughes injury. Did you see Gene Monahan in the dugout telling Pettitte that "it popped"?

I know -

I guess I'll take it as a good sign if in the morning I read that he is only placed on a 15 day and not anything more serious.

A few weeks ago I mentioned the fact the pulled hamstrings and leg injuries were not a coincidence and the Yankees needed to look at the conditioning coach.

They really need to look at the conditioning coach and what he is and isn't doing. During the post-game, Torre was asked about the conditioning routine and his response was vague - "I really don't know about that, but he must know what he is doing, the injuries just have to be a coincidence".

The report this morning is Hughes will be out 4 to 6 weeks. Not sure whether that is heal time or includes rehabbing starts.

Too bad the kid had it going. Would have been interesting to see what Torre would have done if Hughes had reached his pitch count in the 8th and still had a no hitter going.

Speaking of the no hitter, Mike Myers has to be the most rested reliever in the bullpen and gives up a rocket of a hit to a left handed hitter. Then Joe finishes the game with Vizciano. Thought they brought up Colter Bean again for just these types of endings??

Good news from the end of the game, Proctor, Farnsworth, henn and Rivera got a second day in a row off. Let's see if Pettitte can give a good outting now that he is back in his normal spot in the rotation

If it's 4-6 weeks total, that's not the end of the world. I saw the post-game too, Prof....it looked to me like Torre was SEETHING when they asked him the question about the conditioning program, but he had to tow the company line to protect Cashman, since Cash threw interference for Joe last week.

I thought we would see Colter Bean too, but maybe Joe figures he needs to use him as a long man tonight in case Pettitte pulls a hammy.

Yankees won, Sox lost....The resurgence has begun.

A follow-up to the hamstring question - Mussina was asked about the injury issue. He had a two-fold response to the question. He said in 17 years of playing pro ball he has never seen anything like the rash of leg injuries. Then he said something that was very telling when asked about the conditioning routine: "I think the question has been raised, I don't know if it has been answered and I am not the one to answer it. It is not my job."

The Yankees may be looking for a new conditioning coach after all.

With the win and everyone else in the division losing, Yankees still reside in last, but are only 1/2 game out of third. Let's hope Hughes lit a fire under the veterans.

WFAN just reported that the Yankees have fired Marty Miller, the director of conditioning.

Well I say good riddance...and off with his head!

When Joe was asked about Marty Miller, he finally had an appropriate statement - "the guy obviously had a lot of knowledge about the human body and conditioning, but that doesn't mean it translates to baseball".

No surprise here, Pavano is experiencing more pain in the forearm and is headed to Dr. Andrews for an examination. Maybe they ought to do a brain scan - it has become obvious he really doesn't want to pitch anymore. Maybe the Yankees can work out a trade and send him to the Nationals for Nick Johnson. Johnson at least does play a portion of each season before getting hurt.
