Bombers end their win streak at 6, but continue their series win streak - now at 5.
Perhaps I can come to terms with the idea that they are not going to win every game from now until the end of the season, so I take some satisfaction in the winning of series as an acceptable consolation. If they keep doing that to the end - then I believe they will make the playoffs.
I think everyone is mostly on the same page as it relate to Kei Igawa. Clearly he is trying hard, you like the passion, want him to do well, but at the end of the day, maybe he just doe not have American level goods. All along Yankee management has tried to managed expectations about this guy stating he was a back of rotation guy - if they really believed that, do you shell out a 5-year deal and that kind of jack for someone you believe is a number 5 starter? Based on available evidence right now, I would place this contract right next to Giambi and Pavano's as it relates to Cashman blunders.
I would not be surprised if this was his last start. Either he's being moved to the bullpen or moved back to the farm to make room for one of the big three.
Generation Next: Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, and Jeff Karstens combined for 17 innings, 1 run and 22 strikeouts for Scranton WB this past week. I am not ready to anoint Chamberlain as ready to get a start - but agree that maybe he gets a 7th or 8th inning workout. I do believe that both Karstens and Hughes are ready to go and would be an improvement over Igawa. I think the time is now for these guys.
Yanks now head to Baltimore for 3 1/3 games; still 7.5 back in the division, 4.5 back in the Wild Card behind Seattle and Cleveland.
In Other News: Sean Henn blew his wide open chance to seal his position on the roster for the rest of the season. Jason Giambi is set to make a pair of minor league rehab starts. Will it be a positive or negative if he can make it back? Molina did OK in his Yankees debut. If there is any Red Sox player that I think I can almost root for to do well it is Jon Lester - good story, even better pitcher. I don't like Curt Schilling, but I do like he is willing to say what is one the mind of most as it relates to Bonds and the cloud of steroids in baseball. Josh Phelps went 3 for 4 with the Pirates including one that went yard versus the Mets last night. I think the chances of Griffey being traded back to the Mariners this season so they can make their push into the playoffs is 75%. Mike Vick might take the place of OJ as America's most hated pro athlete. The more things change, the more they stay the same - another Tour de France biker busted for doping, Lindsey Lohan busted for DUI and drug possession, and 8 out of the 11 Democratic Presidential candidates blamed America for all the World's wrongs. Chamberlain has been put in the pen at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Igwa needs the time in the minors to rebuild his confidence. Don't be surprised to see him opt out of the rest of his contract and go back to Japan once the season is over.
Hope the Yankees keep Giambi on the DL until September 1. They don't need him and there is no indication he will ever be the hitter he was.
