Phil Hughes is penciled in as the starter for Saturday's game. I think this guy picks up right where he left off.
Was glad to see A-Rod hitting again and end his 0-for stretch. He needs to get this 500 thing out of the way. I think once he does, he'll be on his way to hitting 20 more from here to the end of the season.
A note on the Captain, Thurman Munson who died almost three decades ago. Put the MVP, Rookie of the Year, Gold Gloves, and World Series championships aside. If anyone wants to know if there's a difference between today's player and yesteryear's player consider this tidbit I found when researching Munson: In 1971 he made 1 error (apparently he was knocked unconscious by an oncoming base runner at which point the ball dislodged from his glove). The guy was hard core. Wish he could have played out his career to see just how great he would have been.
Non-Yankee News: Do the Pirates think they're in contention? They picked up Matt Morris at the trade deadline. I like what the Braves did - they are sending a message that this thing isn't over - and the Mets should be worried. The Brewers look like they are feeling the pressure of being a winner. The division lead has been all but surrendered to the Cubs. Often, young teams need to have their heart broken before they can get to that next level. Maybe losing the division this year will make them better for future seasons. The Gagne deal makes sense for the Sox - on paper. I truly question if this guy has what it takes to play in the pressure cooker of a team that has a win or die posture.

I missed 'The Bronx is Burning' this week and im pretty pissed about it. Was Reggie Jackson that much of an ass-hole? The straw that stirs the drink??? Really???
The Braves' team looks like a window at Macy's during Thanksgiving in NYC...lots of window dressing.
Okay mid here are a few comments regarding your latest rantings. (1) Yes, Fransworth is pathetic right now. (2) The Yankees will not designate him for assignment because they would still have to pay his salary and it would open the door for another team to bring him in at minimum - Cashman may not have all of his marbles when it comes to personnel, but he can't be that stupid. (3) Shelly Duncan will in the long-run prove he can play in the majors, but another Mantle (with apologies to Scooter0 he his not - Though hitting from the right side, he does tend to have the Mantle swing. And yes Scooter, I do remember Mantle and saw him play several times. One of the greatest powershows ever was between Mantle and Frank Howard in RFK Stadium (it may have been called veterans statium at the time) - both players hit three homeruns matching the others location and distance. And yes social security does loom in my not too distant future.
Having said all of that, I believe Duncan is a better card to play right now versus Giambi. But Torre loves his veterans and will probably send Duncan down. (Though I still believe that Cairo will pull a hamstring getting out of bed on Saturday morning and need to go on the DL).
And for our Mets fans - Atlanta probably had one of the most successful trading times in recent months. They land a legit arm for the pen and get a power-hitting switchhitting first baseman. It won't be too long before the Mets slide nicely into third place in the NL East. As for trades the Mets came up with a replacement second baseman from Minnesota. Nice trade that will pay no dividends.
As a side note, anyone beginning to sense we are watching an aging pitcher who doesn't know when the end has come - Clemens.

Mienkiwicz's hand is still broken. He has not been cleared to swing at balls on a tee nor has he been given the go ahead to even throw. He maybe another team player that stays on the DL until September 1.
Scooter - Reggie being the most important Black player outside of Jackie Robinson?? YIKES. Larry Doby, Don Newcombe, Hank Aaron, and Frank Robinson come to mind before Reggie, even Leroy Satchel Paige can be listed before Jackson. (Okay I am showing my age again - all of these individuals played before you were born).
Reggie may have been a big player on the biggest stage for a few years, but his act got very old in New York.
Yankees need to sweep KC. Saturday will be a big day as Hughes comes back - let's hope he can pick up where he left off.
Karstens was terrible in the three innings that he pitched. Everything was up and is ERA is now over 11.00. He has found out rather quickly there is a big difference between pitching rehab in the minors and trying to get by with mediocre pitches in the majors.

2nd - Karstens pitched 60% better than Clemens yesterday so step off!
